Description and Details
This ornate hand engraved snuff box was made by silversmith Edward Smith in Birmingham, 1857.
The exterior features a heavily embellished chased acanthus scroll design with a large centre-piece cartouche on the lid which has been monogrammed "W". Adjacent to the lid, an intricately scrolled thumb-piece can be found, aiding in the ease of opening/use of the snuff-box.
The external shape matches the surface engravings with further scrolled borders on all edges of the box including the base. Interior wise, the box has been gilt, however, due to the age of the box, there is wear in the gilding.
The craftsmanship and feel in hand are second to none as expected from the (then) highly regarded silversmith city of Birmingham. The box features a fully working hinge and lid that has a tight and secure closure.
The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark, date mark (1857), silver lion, Victorian head and the Birmingham assay mark.
A highly ornate silver item ideal for adding intricacy to one's collection or as a thoughtful gift to a special one.
