Description and Details
This exceptionally designed silver wine ewer was made in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson & Co in 1845.
The exterior is finely embellished with a mixture of cast silver applied floral borders and chased motifs. Fittingly, the wine ewer features a band of vine leaves around the top waist of the body with excellent detailing and finesse on the chasing and stippling of the leaves.
A cast silver grape finial is present on the lid of the ewer.
The interior neck and lid of the ewer are gilt with a lustrous gold plate and the body remains relatively clean and is leak-free.
A cast silver f-shaped handle is applied to the body with a sturdy yet elegant appearance with a combination of scrolled acanthus and vine leaves.
Whilst providing a raised and sturdy base for the body, the foot of the ewer is equally aesthetically designed with further foliate chasings terminating in a band of cast silver points.
The middle centre of the body is left with a highly reflective mirror-like surface which consists of angular edges in symmetric intervals. On the right-hand side of the body, the crest & motto "Qui Cust-odit Caveat" of the Cust family is present.
Volume-wise, the ewer holds up to 1 litre of liquid content (1.75 Pints).
Hallmarks are fully present on the side and lid of the ewer with matching marks.
