Magnificent Georgian Silver Gilt "Alexander the Great" Snuff Box - 1809 London

Description and Details 

We are delighted to offer this Georgian silver gilt snuff box depicting a scene from King Alexander the Great's life. 

The box has been made in London 1809 by most likely Edward Edwards - although due to the rubbed maker's mark the identification is difficult (Please do let us know if you believe it is a different maker/have an idea of the maker).

Both the exterior and interior are fully gilded and present an indulging and ornate appearance in addition to the intricately chased lid.

The highlighting feature is unquestionably the chased lid which features multiple greek figures including warriors, ladies and a saddled horse in combination with scrolled motifs which form the borders. The base of the box features a geometric interlocking weave pattern with dotted motifs separating each corner of the mesh pattern.

The interior features a glossy gilt interior with a mirror-like finish. There are a few small spots of wear/patina along the interior edges. 

The weight in hand has a sturdy quality feel, as does the smooth hinge and tight closure of the box.
