Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificent early Victorian solid silver ewer/pitcher made in London 1841 by the acclaimed Royal gold/silversmith, Garrard (marks for Robert Garrard).
Garrard founded in 1735, surviving the test of time, still produces fine silverware and jewellery today and throughout history has been serving and producing exceptional pieces of silver and jewellery for the British Royal Family and the firm was appointed Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843.
It may therefore come as no surprise that this ewer lives up to such prestige with a spectacular design and ornate embellishments. The ewer has been fully gilt (gold on top of sterling silver) presenting a majestic and regal aura with splendour to immediately captivate and seize the gaze of any onlookers.
It has been made from an excellent thick gauge of silver which results in a hefty and reassuring feel, whether held in hand to pour or when placed nobly on a table. This not only symbolises the affluence of being able to afford such heavy articles in precious metal but further displays the level of craftsmanship and time that would have gone into hammering and 'hand raising' such a piece from a single thick sheet of silver - a laborious and artisanal craft in an era without the aid of electrical tools.
The overall form is majestic with fluidity and curved aesthetics throughout, aptly characterising its use for pouring liquids, whether be it wine or water. The asymmetric side profile is reminiscent of Rococo styling and the entire surface has been meticulously hand engraved with scrolled acanthus, birds and a central mythological figure, possibly a harpy.
Owing to its fully gilt surface which prevents the usual tarnishing, it allows for the ewer to be displayed or used practically in a wide range of ways. Whether be it a centrepiece on a table or the most opulent pitcher in a dining setting, this ewer is bound to be a distinguished piece of silverware and a conversation starter in its own right.
The ewer is fully hallmarked with English marks on the top edge near the handle.
