Large Silver Presentation Snuff Box with Police Interest - Thomas Edwards 1838

We are pleased to be able to offer this unique silver presentation snuff box of police interest (engravings for the long & loyal service of a constable in Roehampton).

This table snuff box was made by silversmith Thomas Edwards in London, 1838.

The exterior of this box features a classic English engine-turned design with the top of the box featuring a chased border cartouche lid. The base is also encompassed by a chased border of lesser thickness, adding to the aesthetic elements of the box and providing an ornate symmetry of the top and base. 

The hand-engraved floral chasings contrast the mirror-like finish of the top lid which has been engraved as follows: "Presented to police constable Lloyd by a few of the inhabitants of Roehampton in acknowledgement of his long services Jan Y1847".

The interior is fully gilt and remains in pristine condition with the original mirror-like glossy finish.

The lid and hinge of the box are constructed phenomenally with a very smooth hinge and a perfect tight closure.

All hallmarks are clear and present on the interior of the box (maker, date, Victorian head, silver lion, London assay).

A piece of silverware with police interest and sentimental values - one can imagine that this prosperous gift given by the people of Roehampton was a reflection of the kindness and professionalism delivered by this one constable of the district. Ideal for collectors looking for boxes of excellent condition and historical value.
