Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this beautiful Victorian solid silver snuff box with the marks of Charles Rawlings & William Summers, London 1849.The box is made from a very good gauge of silver with a hefty weight in hand especially considering its proportions. In addition to its weight, the elegant curvature and oblong shape of the box's walls convey excellence in quality and craftsmanship. The exterior has been profusely hand-engraved with fine acanthus and geometric motifs. Despite the base not being normally visible, it has been decorated with no expenses, time or effort spared and every inch has been decorated by a skilled engraver with a blank cartouche in the centre. The top lid features a presentation monogram and scrolled lettering. The interior is fully gilt with a rich gold tone and remains in excellent order with a mirror-like finish. The gilding not only serves an aesthetic contrast to the exterior silver but also provides a layer of protection from the silver oxidising with the contents held within.
