Description and Details
We are delighted to have acquired and offer this magnificent pair of foliate dishes/salt cellars made by Edward, Edward junior, John & William Barnard, London 1840.
The set presents a spectacular naturalistic design, drawing inspiration from nature's free-flowing, asymmetrical and enchanting beauty.
The dishes are ornate and crafted in the form of flared acanthus leaves with each section being meticulously hand-chased, then stippled on top to create a wonderful matte/contrasting appearance.
In spite of what could have been a very utilitarian and bland article, this pair is profusely decorated with such splendour, signifying the time and effort that would have gone into creating each piece whilst also suggesting the status of its owner.
Owing to their versatile form and being a pair, these salts not only offer a wonderful aesthetic in an interior setting but could be used practically in the modern day with some creative uses.
Whether it be for plenty of salt/pepper at a dinner party or as a rotating sauce/condiment selection for the dinner table, we believe such pieces present a versatile offering in addition to their splendour. Some further creative ideas may include: single sorbet servings, jewellery storage, an ashtray, and small confectionery servings.
Overall, an exemplary pair of artistic and decorative foliate dishes, perfect for elevating any interior dining setting or for discerning collectors wishing to add a distinguished set to their display.
A full set of English hallmarks is present on the side of each bowl.
