Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this superb English solid silver inkstand made by Martin Hall & Co in London, 1877.
This inkstand is decorated with the 'Aesthetic Movement' style - an unusual, unique and collectable design with a differentiating style from counterpart pieces of the era.
The Aesthetic Movement, a precursor to the Arts and Crafts Movement was a decorative art style c1870-1900. Regarding this style contextually to silver, the designs were strongly influenced by Japanese themes of nature and wildlife with silverware being hand engraved with fine, minimalistic lines portraying birds, leaves and flowers.
This inkstand remains in excellent antique condition with its glass liner intact with no chips/damage.
The lid of the inkwell features a figural cherub that sits daintily on top.
The base plate/dish of the inkstand has a cured edge allowing some small items, pens and calligraphy related items to be placed on.
A set of full English hallmarks are present both on the dish and the inkwell with matching marks.
Overall a wonderful collectable yet practical piece of silverware which may be used with present-day ink pens, or as an ornamental display in your home.
