Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificent solid silver gilt cutlery set made by London silversmith Martin Hall & Co. in 1872.
The set is cased in its original fitted box which features a green velvet lining inside with a hard shell exterior - the retailer being Manoah Rhodes Sons in Bradford.
Consisting of a knife, fork and spoon - each piece is magnificently decorated with engravings of foliate and quatrefoil motifs, figures and chased scrolls.
A blank cartouche on each handle is present as such wares were usually given as christening gifts given by parents or even relatives and godparents as a token and symbolism of prosperity and wellbeing of the child.
Each piece is fully hallmarked on the knife/fork and their respective handles.
The set features a particularly high degree of finishing and craftsmanship as presented by the facial/figural at the joint of the blade and handle, the overall gauge of silver and the fine stippled contrasting effect between the scrolls.
The set is a delightful addition to any collection of silverware ideal for display on a dining table or as a wonderful christening gift, with a classic traditional twist for a luxurious modern-day present.
