Description and Details

This English snuff box was made by silversmith Joseph Willmore in Birmingham, 1832. The box is made from sterling silver and externally features a distinct round-edge rectangular shape. The design presents an iconic Georgian/early Victorian design with engine turned reeded lines on all sides of the box. The box has an acanthus leaf and floral designed thumb-piece adjacent to the lid which not only adds to aesthetic values but enables the user to open the box with ease.

In contrast to the monochromatic exterior, the interior has been fully gilded and has a mirror-like glossy gold finish. The snuff box has a full set of hallmarks on the lid, the maker's mark "J.W", silver lion, Georgian head, Birmingham anchor and the date mark "J" for 1832.

The construction quality and feel in hand reflect the precise and intricate craftsmanship of Birmingham silversmiths of the Georgian/early Victorian era. In hand, the box has a firm and secure feel and the sleek elongated-rectangular profile makes for a seamless fit in the hand. The hinge and closure function flawlessly with a smooth yet precise fit upon closing the lid.

A sleek and captivating collector's piece presenting an array of desirable features -  a delightful addition to a collection whether for personal use or as an addition to a bespoke antique display.

  • Distinct Elongated Rectangular Snuff Box Design
  • Fully Hallmarked - "J.W", Birmingham Anchor, Silver Lion, Georgian Head and Date Mark 1832.
