Description and Details
This Victorian silver snuff/vinaigrette box was made by silversmith Hillard & Thomason in Birmingham, 1850. Needless to say, the box is a highly decorated with hand engraved acanthus leaves on both the top lid and base of the box. In addition to the external ornate chasing, the box itself is scalloped and features numerous angled curves allowing for a better grip in addition to its aesthetic allure.
The interior features a mirror-like gold plating which contrasts the exterior silver tone. The rounded edges and sleek profile allows for the owner to carry this box on the go - an ideal snuff/vinaigrette box for a day outing on special & classy occasions. The box does have one small area on the side where the hinge of the grill has been removed (refer to photo).
The construction quality is superb as expected from fine Birmingham silver craftsmanship. The hinge and closure of the lid are flawless with a perfect, seamless fit. Upon holding the box in hand, the fine curved edges and the hand chased motifs are evermore apparent - one can truly admire the exceptional standards of British craftsmanship of the Victorian era.
Not only does this box bring aesthetic gratification to the owner but further carries a sense of true antique craftsmanship and skill required to produce such objects with far less technology than the current generation - which focuses far less on each individual quality over the quantity.
