Description and Details
We are pleased to offer this Scottish solid silver wine ewer/jug made by silversmith John Russel in Glassgow, 1887.
The external design features an ornate and aesthetically symmetric curved design with intricate embellishments on around the side, the fluted neck, handles and even the base.
The circumference of the jug's waist is intricately engraved and chased with multiple scrolling motifs and each figure portrayed in the centre differs from one another and a vacant cartouche is present on the other side of the wine jug.
The interior is clean and does not have any issues such as leaks.
The applied handle features an S-shaped curve with two ivory insulators which have some hairlines and a chip to the top - all pins are present and provide a sturdy handle.
The lid and fluted neck of the ewer is also chased with additional scrolls and decorative motifs including a scrolled finial at the top. The hinge and closure of the lid are excellent.
The base is fully hallmarked with the Glasgow assay, makers mark, date mark and silver passant, and a noteworthy point may be the extended embellishments of the chasing even around the base where it is not visible in use signifying the care and excellence in craftsmanship that was put into the manufacture of this item.
A beautiful and aesthetically pleasing item for practical usage with other silver tableware or as an ornate and elaborate addition to a silver collection.
