Antique Victorian 18ct Gold Shell Cameo Brooch with Figural Maenad/Bacchante - c.1860

We are delighted to offer this magnificent 18ct gold Victorian shell cameo made c.1860. 

The cameo features an intricate and elegant hand-engraved figural head of a Maenad/Bacchante (female followers of Bacchus).

The facial expression, smoothness of skin and the height of embossing/engraving is impressive and captivating on this particular cameo. The curvature of the surface in addition to the height of the figurehead is particularly beautiful upon wearing and moving - depending on the lighting and angle of viewing, the vine leaves and curled hair is accentuated magnificently.  

The border and frame are made from solid 18ct gold and feature a lovely twisted rope design and the gold tone elevates the splendour and majestic appearance of this brooch. 

The reverse side of the brooch features a c-clasp pin and a safety chain allowing you to fasten the brooch securely onto a lapel/clothes.

Condition: Good antique condition with no major issues/damage. For accuracy: some hairlines are present on the dark background due to the nature of shells/the age of these antique cameos. 

These hairlines are only faintly visible from the front and unless placed in front of a light from behind, cannot be seen very distinctly (as per the last photo). There is no structural damage and the carving remains very crisp. 

We aim to overemphasize and state these issues to avoid disappointment and thus please rest assured they are not significant nor affect the usage of the items.
