Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this Georgian trio of solid sterling silver salt/butter shell dishes with the marks of J T Younge, Walker & Crowder, Sheffield 1807.This set of three dishes/salts are delightfully sculpted in scallop shell forms with three supporting Rococo-style feet. The overall three-dimensional form and shape are beautiful no matter which angle it is viewed from. True to the original Rococo philosophy & design, these shells also feature a fluid and ornate design with scalloped edges and scrolled terminals as if to invite the viewer to take a look at it from all sides and angles. Such dishes would predominantly have been used as salts on a dining table or perhaps as a butter dish on occasion, however, we believe that such versatile and elegant pieces of silverware have equally, if not more practical uses in the modern day.For instance, complementing the nautical theme, one may wish to use them to serve seafood hors d'oeuvres such as caviar, prawn cocktails or even some oysters/scallops in an opulent and artistic manner. Furthermore, due to its bowl-like shape, it could also hold confectionery, serve a scoop of sorbet or, deviating from culinary uses, be used as an excellent jewellery tray on your side table to hold smaller rings, pearls and brooches. A fine period crest is beautifully hand engraved on the tip of each dish.
Owing to its gilt interior (gold on top of solid silver for additional protection from tarnishing) and its raised feet, despite its modest size, they certainly present an aura of splendour and magnificence. Whilst impressive in its own right, this set would most certainly further elevate the ambience of an interior setting with further antique wares or perhaps, act as a unique contrasting piece of interiorware in a more contemporary setting.
A full set of English hallmarks are present on the base of the dish with matching marks for all three dishes.
