Description and Details
We have had the pleasure to acquire and offer this unique military interest solid silver tankard made by the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company in London, 1900.
The tankard features an exceptional high-relief, embossed design of Gothic motifs including chased flowers, leaves and scrolled designs.
The central cartouche for the presentation of this tankard features the following hand-engraved message: "Royal Marine Officer Challenge Cup won by Thomas Winch May 1906 2. UP".
The top of the tankard features a hinged dome-shaped lid, conjoined to the top section of the handle and thumbpiece.
The body of the vessel has a very large and accommodating volume allowing for up to 1 litre/1.7 pint of liquid to be held within.
The base is slightly widened allowing for the tankard to sit upright very steadily.
There are no leaks in this cup and thus liquids can be held within. Whilst tankards would have originally been used to hold beer, this large vessel allows for an array of your favourite drinks to be held within - why not get creative and enjoy a beverage of your choice in a luxurious manner.
A full set of English hallmarks are marked on the side of the cup and the makers signature on the base.
Overall a superb, silver lidded tankard with an impressive decorative style and historic interest of the Royal Marines - ideal for military interest collectors, interior decorations or for practical usage.
