Description and Details

We are delighted to have acquired and offer this magnificent solid silver-gilt nef made c.1890 most likely of German Hanau origin.

Striking, regal and majestic even upon a quick glance, this centrepiece ship presents itself as a remarkable piece of 19th-century silver artistry.

A nef (neff) was primarily an extravagant table ornament made from precious metals with varying purposes, such as holding various condiments, cutlery or to be used as a drinking vessel. Apparent with its brilliance and impressive craftsmanship, such pieces would be a considerable status symbol and a reflection of the owner's prosperity and power.

Early examples from the 13th to 16th centuries consisted of designs to accommodate salt/spices, with subsequent century designs accommodating more versatility and variation. This particular example from the late 19th century presents a hull design in which wine could be held with the two canons (front and rear) serving as a pouring spout.

The nef would often be placed in front of a person of significance, whether it be during banquets for Kings, Queens, Emperors and Dukes - its presence and positioning would distinguish the monarch from other guests.

Aside from its golden splendour, what is particularly delightful about this nef is its excellent proportions and superior craftsmanship compared to most counterpart nefs of the period. Whilst most nefs are undeniably impressive, upon closer inspection, sometimes one may find that the proportions are slightly off, oddly exaggerated or 'clumsy' looking. Additionally, due to their overall might, on some pieces, details can sometimes be a little rough around the edges.

In our eyes, this particular nef combines all the most important attributes: proportions, intricacy and quality. Its hull presents a fabulous hand-chased motif of mythological marine figures, consisting of Poseidon, Triton, Cherubs and mythical fish adorning all sides. The relief of the decoration is significant and its detailed chasing work can be particularly appreciated around the figureheads.

Furthermore, whislt many nefs are designed with a 'wheel base', this example features four cast dolphin/fish figures that support it - a small but unique and distinguishing design choice.

The top section is equally impressive with a wonderfully realistic design of sails, ropes, figures and canons. The smaller top sail and flags move freely, and one of our favourite features is the freely moving anchor that is attached to a belcher chain, reminiscent of jewellery chains in the Victorian era.

The main mast is hand-engraved with an English Royal coat of arms and the rear section of the nef comes apart to reveal the inner compartment.

Overall, an exemplary piece of fine 19th-century silversmithing and a wonderful centrepiece bound to elevate the splendour of any interior for the distinguished collector. A stunning addition to a display or a tremendous gift for marine lovers.

Two hallmarks are present on the left-hand side of the mast, probably Hanau marks, late 19th century.

Condition

Good Condition -  The nef is in good overall condition with no major damage or issues. The gilding remains good overall with only slight wear on high points. Some slight patina which adds a nice colour and the usual fine surface scratches commensurate with age. For accuracy, there may have been minor old restorations on some wiring and mast parts, however, this is not very apparent owing to its overall design and fine lines. In the internal compartment, there is a soldered separator, possibly added later.

We aim to overemphasise and state these issues to avoid disappointment and thus please rest assured they are not significant nor affect the usage of the items.

Please refer to the photographs to examine the condition in further detail as they form part of the condition description.
