Description and Details
We are thrilled to be able to offer this phenomenal piece of silver made by Scottish silversmith William Marshall of Edinburgh in 1828.Exceptional on all fronts, this two-handled tray is most certainly captivating and splendid - an exemplary piece of fine Scottish silver and a remaining treasure of the Georgian period. Despite the entire tray being made from solid sterling silver, it certainly does not shy away from opulence nor is there even a slight hint of cost-cutting measures to be found. This is immediately apparent upon first glance by its impressive size and heavy weight quality (3.3kg, 70x40cm). In addition to its majestic presence and size, the craftsmanship on this piece is equally, if not more spectacular. The outer border is ornately hand-chased, engraved and stippled with acanthus and floral motifs. Two very large and elegant cast-silver handles are applied on either side, superfluous in elegance and design, continuing with the acanthus theme and blending seamlessly into the outer border.
The inner border is also profusely hand chased with further floral and foliate Rococo motifs, leaving a blank and contrasting central cartouche that is almost mirror-like. Whilst this piece would make for a fabulous centrepiece attraction on a dining table or part of a luxurious interior display, it may equally be used practically in the modern-day for many uses. We have photographed just a few many suggestions - why not get creative yourself and enjoy the versatility trays and salvers offer (canapes, seafood, and Sunday/festive roasts etc).
The tray is fully hallmarked with Georgian Scottish marks on the base and remains in excellent condition.
