Description and Details
We are delighted to have acquired and be able to offer this splendid double-sided "castle top" card case by silversmith Taylor & Perry of Birmingham in 1841.
The case features two different castle scenes on both sides with one side depicting Windsor Castle and the opposing side portraying Kenilworth Castle.
Windsor Castle was founded by the famed 'William the conquerer' in the 11th century and still to this day is standing strong and is open to visitors worldwide and is the world's oldest occupied castle. A very accurate, detailed and intricate version is present on the card case finished to a very high degree as with Perry's works in collectable small items of silver.
Kenilworth Castle (Unfortunately in a much poorer state than Windsor Castle).
Kenilworth Castle was also built during the Norman times and draws interest due to its historical survival especially through notable periods such as the Norman and Tudor times with its enduring charm and magnificent workmanship surviving to this day.
In addition to the beautifully depicted Windsor Castle on the opposing side, the detailing and high relief of Kenilworth Castle & the garden's architecture on this card case is equally ebullient.
Besides the impressive scenes on the fronts, the overall shape, aesthetics and geometry of the card case form an array of highly desirable and unique features such as the slightly concaved corners and the overall cartouche-like shape of the case.
The hand-engraved acanthus motifs are an additional delight with very fine and ornate decoration made with the utmost skill, care and artistry. The contrast between such natural motifs and impressive man-made structures wonderfully juxtaposes the finest qualities of such archaic times.
The card case is of just the right size to fit standard business cards, credit card and any other small items one may wish to place within - as such one may experience the best of both worlds between an enduring antique item of aesthetic beauty and practicality.
The card case is fully hallmarked underneath the lid which closes on top.
