Description and Details

This English solid silver vinaigrette was made by silversmith Thomas Shaw in Birmingham, 1833. This vinaigrette features a classic Georgian design with stippled interlocking weaving motifs on the exterior of the box and a contrasting silver gilt interior. On one side of the lid, an unmonogrammed cartouche is present, whilst the other half presents a floral engraved design encompassed by further stippled lines.

Considering its age (186 years), the box is in good condition with the lid and hinge functioning well with a smooth hinge and solid fit upon closure. However, the vinaigrette grill is missing causing a slight imbalance in weight (the box does not stay upright if placed on its own). The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark "TS", silver lion, Birmingham anchor and the date mark "K" for 1833.

A great little addition to collectors that seek a classic Georgian design antique item - whether be it for personal use as a small pill case/vinaigrette/snuff box.

  • Fully Hallmarked - "TS", Birmingham Anchor, Silver Lion and Date Mark 1833.
