Description and Details
This English solid silver snuff box was made by silversmith Thomas Hayes in Birmingham, 1897. The exterior of the box features a highly decorative repousse design with the lid depicting the landscape of the countryside. The foreground portrays four figures (one on horseback) in addition to a background scene of a hilly grassland and a highly detailed cottage in the distance. Additionally, the sides also feature a repousse design with acanthus leaf scrolls and an unmonogrammed cartouche. The interior has been silver gilt, however, due to the age of the item, patina is present throughout the inner sides.
Upon holding the box, the high relief repousse is further apparent in addition to the fine detailing of background textures such as the grassland and the wooden boardings of the cottage. The hinge and closure of the lid function as intended with a smooth hinge action and a solid closure with an audible ‘click’ when shut.
The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark “T.H", silver lion, Birmingham anchor, and the date mark "x" for 1897.
A great addition to any collection in order to further animate and accentuate one's bespoke silver antique collection.
