This English solid silver table snuff box was made by silversmith Hillard & Thomason in Birmingham during the Victorian era - 1850. Distinct table size dimensions in combination with a classic iconic Victorian design – an unquestionably striking piece of silverware with a mighty presence.
Quite literally “reflecting” the pinnacle of industrial growth during the Victorian era, the box features a high polish finish in addition to the high degree of craftsmanship presented through an array of ornamental features. The curvature of each of the sides in combination with a sturdy weighted base makes for an ideal display piece, fit for an ornate interior such as a dining room in addition to an antique table.
The exterior is constructed from sterling silver and features a hand engraved scroll-like leaf design fully covering all sides, in addition to a lid with a monogrammed cartouche in the centre. Adjacent to the lid is a high relief thumb-piece which has been hand chased with intricate designs of acanthus leaves. The interior is lightly gilt, adding another dimension to the visual aesthetics of the box.
Upon holding the box, the craftsmanship and prestigious construction quality are apparent with the reassuring weight and the precise geometric dimensions of the box. Additionally, the hinge and closure of the lid function flawlessly with a smooth closing action and a precise closure of the lid.
The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark "H&T", silver lion, Birmingham anchor, Victorian head and the date mark "B" for 1850.
