Description and Details

We are delighted to be able to offer this fabulous solid silver snuffer tray made by Paul Storr in London, 1819.Antique Georgian Solid Silver Snuffer Tray - Paul Storr 1819Paul Storr was the most celebrated English silversmith of the early 19th Century and was receiving commissions from the British Aristocracy and Royalty (more info below). Unsurprisingly, the wares are of the finest quality and his legacy lives on today with many of his works exhibited in museums and in the Royal Collection Trust. In fact, an identical snuffer tray (less the engraved Royal crest) is present in the Royal Collection Trust at this time of writing and a quick internet search will present you with their records/website listing. This tray features Storr's iconic and extravagant design of a fully gadrooned border with alternating cast foliate anthemion/palmette accents and two fabulous volute handles on each end.The tray is raised by four applied-cast silver feet that are also decorated with regency-style motifs.

This snuffer tray would originally have been used to place a silver snuffer (for putting out candles) on top however, due to its versatile size and design, in the modern day, it is equally suitable for practical uses.Antique Georgian Solid Silver Snuffer Tray - Paul Storr 1819 Why not indulge and get creative with ideas of how to serve your favourite treats or perhaps as an opulent way of offering and enjoying a cigar in the company of your guests? Other uses may include a pen tray, jewellery stand, cutlery holder, etc.

The tray is fully hallmarked with Georgian English marks on the side base. The marks are worn however, the "P.S" Paul Storr's maker's mark is unmistakably present.

Further on Paul Storr (1771-1844)

Paul Storr, England's most celebrated early 19th-century silversmith was born in London, 1771. He began his career in 1792 and quickly built up a reputation for his fine crafts and by the beginning of the 19th century, he had become one of London's most renowned silversmiths, producing silverware for King George III and King George IV.

In 1807, Storr worked with Philip Rundell and became a partner in 1811 for the workshops for Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, the finest goldsmiths and retailers of the period. Although he kept his own hallmarks and maintained his own workshop, this partnership further accelerated his rise to prominence and provided more exposure allowing him to display his finest skills.

His works can now be found in the finest art institutions and Royal palaces none less than Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, the V&A and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
