Description and Details
This English solid snuff box was crafted in Birmingham by silversmith Joseph Willmore in 1822. Needless to say, the aesthetic design and geometric proportions are exquisite whilst retaining recognisable and timeless Georgian features such as the floral thumb-piece which unlike counterpart boxes, lines the whole circumference of the lid.
The exterior is constructed from sterling silver and features engine turned motifs on the lid, curved sides and a fully chased lining on the top of the box. In contrast, the interior is fully gilded in a gold plate, adding further to the ornate and visually captivating features of this snuff box. In hand, the study weight gives a reassuring feel of Birmingham quality silver and the box stands steadily when placed and displayed.
Considering its age (197 years), the box is in excellent condition with the lid and hinge functioning flawlessly with a smooth hinge and solid fit upon closure. The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark "J.W", silver lion, Birmingham anchor, Georgian head and the date mark "y" for 1822.
This snuff box unquestionably features some of the finest and most captivating aspects of a classic Georgian Snuff box - a wonderful addition to silver antique collections both for display or personal use.
