Description and Details
We are delighted to be able to offer this magnificent silver-gilt heavy table snuff box, made by silversmith Thomas Shaw in Birmingham, 1828.
The highlight of the box is undoubtedly the exterior which is embellished with silver gilding on all sides with an engine-turned base and lid.
Additional decorations include the very precise yet bold cast-silver chased sides featuring a scrolled acanthus leaf design.
A noteworthy detail is the finesse on the finishing of the acanthus leaves: unlike standard chased/cast designs, this box presents a superb level of accuracy and precision. (Please refer to macro photos of sides).
The interior is further gilded with a brighter and glossy finish gold plating. The lid has a presentation inscription written in Norwegian, translating roughly to "To Rhythm Master Jacob Borch Certificate of Recognition from the Kjærulf Heirs".
The quality of the box is further apparent by feeling its heavyweight construction (151g) in addition to the smooth hinge and lid that has a tight and perfect closure.
The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark, date mark (1828), silver lion, Georgian head and the Birmingham assay mark.
A highly decorative and ornate silver-gilt table snuff box, ideal for uncompromising collectors of unique silverware from the Georgian era.
