Antique Chinese Solid Silver Trompe L'oeil Salt/Mustard Pot - 19th Century

Description and Details

A Chinese 900 - grade solid silver Trompe L'oeil design salt/mustard pot with bamboo design feet. The base is fully hallmarked with 90 HW and the Chinese Maker's mark, however, unfortunately, we were unable to identify the exact maker and date of this silver item. Trompe L'oeil literally meaning "deceive the eye" in French - is a technique used in order to present a certain three-dimensional effect such as interweaving patterns of wood and in this case the design depicts interweaved bamboo stips commonly found in artistic designs throughout China and Asia. The small basket shaped pot features two miniature handles and four bamboo stem legs on the base - one leg, however, is slightly crooked most likely from the beginning as it does not appear as if it has been damaged prior to manufacturing.
