Description and Details
This English snuff box was made by silversmith Edward Smith in Birmingham, 1859. The box is constructed from sterling silver and features a distinctive "capsule" shaped geometric design. The exterior has a polished finish on all sides and the lid has a chased thumb-piece and the top has been monogrammed.
The interior features a brushed matte finish and due to heavy reparations, some areas are covered with solder. The snuff box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark "ES", silver lion, Birmingham anchor and the date mark "K" for 1859. In hand, the box has a very sturdy weigh of 127g (4.47oz), ideal for placement on a table.
The hinge and closure function perfectly, however, the box is in a heavily repaired condition with the corners, lid and bottom being soldered. However, due to reparation, the box can be used as there are no holes in the bottom - a nice addition for personal use for pills, snuff, etc.
