Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this highly collectable and rare pair of Victorian solid silver fish servers made by silversmith Francis Higgins of London in 1882.
Whilst there are many highly desirable elements of this set, the figural handles that are cast in the form of a fisherman and woman are unquestionably the highlighting feature of these servers.
Unlike counterpart fish servers, these feature an immense and incredible amount of detailing and craftsmanship which is exemplary to the pinnacle of fine Victorian silverware.
Particularly noteworthy details can be seen in the crisp and defined clothing on the figures such as the creases and collars of their shirt/dress, the net that is upheld by the fisherman and the charming facial features of each figure (and even including the fish that they have caught - the scales and eyes are very intricately present).
In addition to the craftsmanship, the idea behind these pair is equally splendid with a little novelty and storytelling in the sense that the fisherman/woman have caught the fish, and supposedly one is being served in both senses of having the fish caught by them and the prepared fish meal being served by these pair.
Equally matched, the overall craftsmanship and thick gauge of silver used in all elements of these servers are second to none. The entire weight and feel in hand is very sturdy and gives a reassuring feel, perfectly combining the artistic elegance with the practicality of usage.
The knife and fork are ornately embellished with piercing close to the centre and an array of and engraved motifs to surround it.
The knife and fork both have an unengraved cartouche which makes this set excellent for collectors or those who wish to add their own engravings.
Both pieces are fully hallmarked with matching English marks with a clear definition.
Needless to say, these fish servers most certainly present the most unique and desirable features for collectors of figural silverware. Additionally, one may look beyond its sole purpose as silver flatware and view this set as more of an artistic and sculpture-work approach with the finest craftsmanship and detailing being utilised to achieve such exemplary finesse in these pair of rare fish servers.
