Description and Details

This delightful Victorian solid silver cigarette case was made by silversmith William Hair Haseler of Birmingham in 1898.

Unlike counterpart Victorian cigarette cases, this one features an unusual and fascinating opening mechanism in which the top lid is uncovered, which allows for the spring-loaded hinge at the base to open the case along the horizontal axis.

Inside, the case features a fully gilt interior which not only contrasts the exterior very well but provides a layer of protection from the silver oxidising with the cigarettes/contents inside.

The external motifs are hand engraved and feature a classic Victorian foliate style aesthetic with a blank cartouche in the centre. Please note the cartouche is slightly depressed/possible removal of a monogram.

The straps are still present inside but lack its elasticity due to the cigarette case being over 100+ years of age.

Full set of matching English hallmarks are clearly marked on all components, including the lid and two sides of the case signifying the original design mechanism (not a later added).

A unique collectable item of Victorian silverware with an excellent design and mechanism. Ideal for those who wish to add an unusual collectable piece of silverware to their collection of for stylish usage with small objects to be held within.

  • Rare spring-loaded horizontal split opening design.
  • Hand engraved Victorian foliate design.
  • Collectable and unique piece of Victorian silverware.
