Description and Details

We are delighted to offer this wonderful Victorian solid silver sugar caster/shaker made by silversmith Horace Woodward & Co in London, 1888.

Made during the Victorian era, this shaker features some ornate chasing through the lower portion of its body that presents an array of acanthus and floral motifs.

The upper lid is intricately pierced with multiple foliate motifs which are not only aesthetically beautiful but allows for just the right amount of sugar to be scattered onto your desired food of choice. The lid is secured by a screw-down mechanism that has a good and tight closure.

The interior is fully gilt and remains in excellent, clean condition - ideal for modern-day usage.

The overall quality of this sugar shaker is excellent indeed with quite a thick gauge of silver that can be felt in hand. Despite its chased body, there are no flimsy nor pierced areas and is an exemplary piece for fine Victorian tableware.

The large and tall design allows for a significant amount of sugar to be held within.

Full set of hallmarks are present on both the side of the lid and the base of the caster. For collectors: The queen's head duty mark is present; this caster was made slightly earlier than some of the later casters of similar design.

A wonderful addition to those looking to add an ornate yet practical piece of silverware whether be it for display, interior decor or modern-day usage - this item would most certainly complement other tableware very well and one can imagine the indulgent experience of gently sifting some sugar upon eating strawberries/desserts.
