Description and Details
This lovely solid silver basket was made during the Victorian era by silversmith Henry Atkin in Sheffield, 1892.
The basket features a unique pierced and chased design alternating every two sectors/segments in the centre bowl of the piece. Each section is divided with an "S" shaped beaded border and has an array of ornate chased foliate motifs in between.
The basket rests on a raised oblong-shaped foot which provides a sturdy and wide base allowing for the basket to hold fruits and sweets with no issues.
The handle of the basket is equally pierced and has a continuation of the foliate motifs as seen on the main body.
Due to its flared sides/rims, the basket allows for quite some space for the user to place some fruits, berries or cakes.
(Interesting note: Silver baskets with handles were considered a sign of prestige due to its nature to be carried by servants who would carry the food to the owner's table from the kitchen - a powerful household would have multiple servants and the owners themselves would not have to hold/carry flatware and thus the baskets are not only useful through design but also serves as a subtle symbol of wealth).
The basket is fully hallmarked on the rim with clear English marks.
Overall, an excellent piece both for embellishing your interior decor or for practical usage on dining tables/special occasions such as afternoon teas - it would be a wonderful piece for serving any consumables of your choice such as scones etc.
