Description and Details
This ornate solid silver table snuff box was made by the renowned silversmith Nathaniel Mills in Birmingham, 1836. Nathaniel Mills is considered to be one of the top, if not the best box maker of the Georgian/Victorian era and as such, this box is of no exception and displays an array of desirable features and a high degree of craftsmanship.
The exterior of the box features richly chased floral motifs with acanthus leaves and scrolls mixed within. The lid on top has an applied cast border of continued flowers/foliage which surrounds a large and blank cartouche - ideal for adding personal engravings/monograms should you wish to do so.
In hand, the snuff box has a very sturdy and heavy weight that conveys a sense of high-quality craftsmanship and importance in the box's overall presence. The hinge and lid are superb with a smooth and tight closure.
The widened and curved sides of the box allows for a generous amount of snuff/pills to be contained whilst also providing a sturdy base, ensuring it sits righteously on top of a table.
Interior wise, the box has been fully gilt which not only magnificently contrasts the silver exterior, but also provides a layer of protection from the snuff which may oxidise/tarnish the silver.
The box is fully hallmarked with English marks on both the interior lid and base.
A superb box made by a celebrated maker for all those who wish to add a fine table snuff box to their collection, whether be it for display or practical usage.
