Description and Details
We are delighted to be able to offer this wonderful Japanese silver box made in the Meiji period (c.1890) by silversmith Hidetada/Shuusei (signed on the front in Kanji).
This particular box features an exceptional top panel of 'Shibuichi' copper alloy (the dark greyish parts) along with a gradation of 'Shakudou' copper which contrasts the dark background with a slight red/coppery hue that is present in an almost emulsified manner.
In addition to the unique and intricate use of subtle tones, the highlighted points such as the trees, leaves and birds all feature a mixture of fine precious metals such as pure silver (Jungin 1000/1000), gold and Shakudou copper.
A noteworthy point may be the aesthetics and design of the box which upon first glance may seem 'minimalist' however, interestingly, unlike most other Japanese-export silverware which features a design made to suit the western market (such as dragons, enamel, etc), this box's lid depicts a more traditional and classic Japanese design more orientated towards the likes of Kakejiku works (Japanese hanging scrolls).

Above: An example of the style found in Kakejiku scrolls - though the artwork differs, the similar style can be observed by the fine lines and darkish hues which leaves the subtleties of the design drawn/engraved by the artist to make a statement in comparison to an over-embellished and ostentatious design.
The interior of the box is made from wood and the silver is mounted along the sides of the base and lid.
A Jungin hallmark is present on that base - signifying the Japanese 1000/1000 parts silver purity.
