Description and Details
We are delighted to be able to offer this magnificent solid silver Georgian dish engraved with the arm of the 1st Duke of St Albans - Charles Beauclerk (1670-1726).
This dish was made in London 1714 and features an impressive large size of 40cm and 1.2kg - fit for even Royalties as was the case with this dish.
Left: The Coat of Arms engraved in the centre of the dish.
Right: An original print from the book of "The Peerage of England: by Arthur Collins Esq 1779" - this page from the antique book will be framed and included with the dish.
This dish made in 1714 uses Britannia silver - a higher grade 95.84% silver purity as to the usual 92.5% sterling silver content.
The generous size of and thick gauge of silver allows for an array of contents to be placed within. Equally, due to the peerage and historic interest, it may serve as an ornamental display centrepiece and a remarkable piece of interior silverware.
NB: The dish has had later embellishments (the intricate stippling and applied cast border around the edge of the dish). Unfortunately, as a result of the different standard purity of silver (80% instead of 95.83%) used for the embellishments, the original hallmarks have been cancelled out and 're-assayed' by the London Assay Office.
A superb piece of silverware with an important and provenance - ideal for interior centrepiece displays or collectors of Royal silverware.
