Description and Details
This heavy solid silver table snuff box was made by silversmith Francis Clark in Birmingham, 1845. Francis Clark was considered to be one of the top box makers of the Georgian/Victorian era competing with renowned names such as Nathaniel Mills.
This box is of no exception and displays an exemplary array of ornate features that perfectly showcases such high regards of the firm's leading quality and craftsmanship.
The exterior of the box features richly chased floral motifs with an applied cast border surrounding the blank cartouche on the lid. The sides and base of the box presents a classic engine-turned design which complements the overall aesthetics of the box.
In hand, the snuff box has a very sturdy and heavy weight that conveys a sense of high-quality craftsmanship and importance in the box's overall presence. The hinge and lid are superb with a smooth and tight closure.
The large and thick size of the box allows for a generous amount of snuff/pills to be contained whilst also providing a sturdy base, ensuring it sits righteously on top of a table.
Interior wise, the box has been fully gilt which not only magnificently contrasts the silver exterior, but also provides a layer of protection from the snuff which may oxidise/tarnish the silver.
The box is fully hallmarked with English marks on both the interior lid and base.
A superb box made by a celebrated maker for all those who wish to add a fine table snuff box to their collection, whether be it for display or practical usage.
