Description and Details
This wonderful "castle top" snuff box was made in the late Georgian period by silversmith Taylor & Perry of Birmingham in 1836.
The highlighted lid of the snuff box features an intricate scene of Windsor Castle from across the Thames River.
Windsor Castle was founded by the famed 'William the conquerer' in the 11th century and still to this day is standing strong and is open to visitors worldwide and is the world's oldest occupied castle. Such incredible history and monumental architecture are captured on this snuff box with a great degree of accuracy and fine craftsmanship.
The castle scene is encompassed by a chased floral border that draws the eye to the centre as a frame would to a piece of artwork. Furthermore, the sides and base of the box have a classic engine-turned design.
The base of the box features additional chased borders and an unmonogrammed cartouche - great for personal engravings. Such ornate chasing is further continued to the thumb-piece on the lid which aids in the opening of the box.
Interior wise, the box features a fully gilt surface which not only contrasts the silver exterior very well but adds a layer of protection from the snuff/contents oxidising with the silver over time.
The hinge and closure of the box are superb with a smooth yet tight closure that gives a sense of security and high-quality craftsmanship found in these fine pieces of silverware.
The box is fully hallmarked on both the lid and base with clear English marks.
An exemplary and wonderful example of a highly collectable snuff box with an iconic scene of Windsor Castle - ideal for uncompromising collectors or as a symbolic piece of old English history.
An Idea for a day's outing: One sensational way to appreciate this box even further may be to bring this box should one ever have the opportunity to visit the castle and try to locate the exact spot from which this scene was captured and compare the wonderful scenes you will be able to experience.
