Description and Details
This delightful Russian cloisonne silver enamel box is made by Grigory Sbitnev in Moscow c.1900.
Featuring a timeless and iconic Russian cloisonne design, the exterior is highly embellished with white, turquoise, red and dark blue enamel colours within each intricate "cloisons" (Cloisons are the segmented sections made by applying a silver wire before enamelling).
In addition to the vibrant and classical colours found in cloisonne pieces, this box features excellent geometric proportions and aesthetics design as seen in the six-pointed star motif on the lid, made up from smaller tesselating and conjoined shapes.
The interior features an indulging fully gilt surface which adds to the vibrant and accented exterior enamel tone. The layer of gold gilding also acts as an extra layer of protection from oxidation and reaction from the contents stored inside.
The hinge and lid of the box function well and smoothly.
Hallmarks fully are present on the lid and base with the kokoshnik 84 mark and Grigory Sbitnev's maker mark in Cyrillic letters - the base marks are worn however the marks on the lid are very clear.
A delightful small yet classic Russian cloisonne piece ideal to add to a collection or for personal usage for storing pills, snuff, small consumables.
