Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this rare and large solid silver-based Victorian wine coaster made by the famous Robert Garrard in London, c.1840 (date letter worn).Garrard of London was and is considered one of the finest gold/silver/jewellery firms and fulfilled many important commissions, particularly in the early part of Queen Victoria's reign.
The firm was appointed goldsmiths to the king in 1830 and subsequently as royal crown jewellers in 1843 by Queen Victoria which lead to further jewellery and silverware being made for the Royal Family. Not only is this wine coaster made by one of the finest silversmiths of the early 19th Century, but it also features a particularly desirable solid silver base which distinguishes it from counterpart coasters that usually have a wooden base on which the bottles stand on.The large and impressive size of the coaster allows for a wide range of bottles and beverages to be held within, whilst the intricate pierced sides and silver base present an aura of elegance, importance and opulence.
Due to the piercings on the side, light can pass through and depending on the angle, beautiful shadows of the intricate patterns can be seen on the table. The silver base has a hand-engraved coat of arms in the centre.
Underneath, a wooden base and felt lining is present in order to prevent scratches on the surface of a table.
This coaster is a very fine example of practical yet exquisitely stylish Victorian silverware.
Whilst ideal for a collection or display, these fine silver items can also be practically used in the modern-day. Whether be it for stylish interior decor or for serving wine or other beverages of your choice, a fine piece from Garrard would most certainly grace a luxury interior.
English hallmarks are present on the lower rim of the coaster with additional marks separately on the silver base. The marks are worn on the rim and on one of the bases, however, are legible under close inspection.
