Rare Georgian Solid Silver Tall Snuff Box with Full Gilding - John & Archibald Douglas 1825

We are delighted to be able to offer this rare Georgian silver-gilt snuff box made by silversmith John & Archibald Douglas in London, 1825.

Upon first glance, the unique silver-gilt design exhibits the interior and exterior of the snuff box. The lid features a classic Georgian engine-turned design with a rose gold cartouche which has an engraved phoenix crest. 

Unlike counterpart snuff boxes, this box presents an array of uncustomary designs. None less than the relatively tall geometric design, a fully gilt finish and the unhinged lid are some of the distinctive features of this snuff box.

With John & Archibald Douglas being best known for making jar tops, the unconventional design may be attributed to his combined skills as a box and jar top maker as the lid, to a slight degree, replicates a top for inkwells.

The interior is equally gilt and is encompassed by the four solid and thick walls of the box. In hand, the box has a compact yet bold and ornate feeling with the base featuring a smooth glossy finish and a thickened lid securely placed on top. 

A full set of matching hallmarks are present, both on the interior lid and the side of the base of the box.

An exceptional collector's snuff box featuring multiple unique details, whilst retaining key elements of classical English Georgian designs.
