Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this rare pair of solid silver Victorian salts made by F B Thomas & Co in London, 1882.The pair is wonderfully modelled in an intricate 'Teniers' pattern: David Teniers was a Flemish painter of the Baroque period with some of his main works featuring a tavern drinking scene. Such scenes were stylistically depicted and replicated on silver as seen with this fine pair of salts.
The pair is heavily decorated with hand chased figures and fine stippling and engravings in the background. The interiors of the salts are gilded which provide a nice contrast as well as protection for the silver (from tarnishing).
Three feet support the main 'bowl' and are cast in the shape of small drunken figures sitting upon a horizontal barrel. Further, a pair of matching spoons are present with the continued novel design of small figures at the terminal.
Whilst very collectable in their own right for lovers of decorative silverware or painting-related wares, these items may also be practically used in the modern-day whether be it for salt, pepper or condiments of your choice such as mustard. A full set of English hallmarks are present on the base of both salts and spoons with matching marks for each piece.
