Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificent Victorian solid silver wine jug/ewer made by silversmith Stephen Smith in London, 1869.
The ewer being made by Stephen Smith features his distinguished and intricate design of a cast-silver 'frieze' depicting grapevines and lions around the waist of the body.
This band of intricate and immaculate detailing is particularly noteworthy - highlighting the level of excellence in the design, proportion and aesthetics of this ewer.
The top finial features a chased foliate bud which allows for an easy opening of the lid. Attached to the top is the swan-neck shaped cast handle, which has further foliate motifs splayed across both sides.
The mid-section of the ewer along with its frieze is presented on top of a sturdy foot which conjoins with the narrowed bottom of the body, further highlighting its elegant curved aesthetics.
A gilt interior is present on the interior of the ewer which remains in excellent condition with no leaks - ideal for practical usage.
The study weight and excellent build quality become ever more apparent in hand, complimenting the overall large size and capacity which allows for both a magnificent display piece on a dining table and as a practical jug, should you wish to use it for a beverage of your preference.
An inscription for Thomas Brown of the Brown Family (Scotland) is present in the middle section with a birthday message that reads "Presented to Thomas Brown on the 70th Anniversary of his birthday Monday, February 21st 1870 by his wife Theresa, sons Thomas and John and Daughter in law Amy Brown".
Full set of hallmarks are present and clearly stamped with no wear.
