Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificent solid sterling silver gilt bowl made in Sheffield, 1860 with the maker's mark of Henry Wilkinson & Co.
Striking and impressive even upon a quick glance, this bowl has been fully silver gilt (gold on top of solid silver) and presents a wonderfully ornate and detailed design.
The exterior features two vacant cartouches with a beautiful scrolled and foliate wreath. On either side, a panel of fabulous high relief hand-chasing is present with floral and further scrolled acanthus leaf motifs.
The workmanship on the chasing is particularly delightful with a very crisp, accurate and intricate design. The background being stippled creates a further textured and contrasting effect.
The bowl rests on a pedestal and is of a very versatile size which allows it to be used in a plethora of ways; whether be it as a sugar bowl, slop bowl or perhaps to put some small snacks or even cherries. We imagine that with a touch of creativity, this bowl would grace any situation even in the modern day, offering a stunning piece of interiorware in combination with practicality.
The bowl is fully marked with English hallmarks on top of one of the cartouches.
