We are delighted to offer this stunning antique Victorian 14ct gold garnet and diamond star brooch/pendant made c.1870.
This piece features such a sweet, intricate yet sophisticated design with a central cherry colour garnet cabochon that is embellished with an inset diamond star.
The mounts feature a gold back with a silver front to enhance the diamonds' shine and sparkle. The uniform silver and red contrasting aesthetic is truly indulgent with an air of regality.
On top, a diamond-set bow and swag accent is present with a foliate terminal on the other end, encompassing the cabochon and highlighting the centre star.
The garnet is of quite a dark cherry hue and under shadows/dark lighting, almost appears black, full of mystery and elusiveness. However, upon a beam of sunlight or depending on the angle of candlelight, the garnet and backing reflect the light with a striking and vivid red colour, as if possessing its own character of understated charm, only revealing its true beauty sparingly.
Unapologetically Victorian and steeped with celestial charm, the central silver star adorned with diamonds is exemplary of the fascination of the Victorians with the solar system. Celestial themes were in vogue during the 1860s and onwards; such pieces were also symbolic, e.g. good luck for stars (even today "wish upon a star").
Such designs also offer the perfect opportunity to display high-level goldsmithing, with intricate and fine gold mounts in which the gems have been meticulously set with a seamless finish.
Splendid in a collection, but better yet, perfect for wearing with a variety of outfits, whether it be for a special occasion or to an evening party where the red would occasionally glisten and come to life under spotlights. Ideal on a coat/jacket lapel, a stylish blouse in the warmer months or on a one-piece dress for more formal occasions, this brooch would grace and immediately elevate your outfit with a single point of distinguished interest.
A thin chain could also be threaded between the pin and brooch to be worn as a pendant owing to the secure trombone clasp.
A very special gift for someone or as an indulgent addition for the discerning antique jewellery lover. This brooch is exemplary of the creative and meticulous Victorian jewellery making and is a wonderful way to display your passion for distinguished antiques, history and style.
Garnet is known to be the birthstone for January and diamonds for April.
The brooch is unmarked, as is common with articles of this period and as such, we have tested it, indicating solid 14ct gold, with a solid silver front.
All of our jewellery comes with a complimentary hard shell gift box with a velvet interior.
