We are delighted to offer this fabulous antique Victorian 18ct gold shell cameo brooch/pendant made c.1880.The cameo depicts a lady 'in profile' (side on) in exceptional detail and intricacy. Despite its age, the engraving remains deep and crisp which can be further appreciated upon closer inspection under natural lighting. Such intricacy and attractive proportions of an almost lifelike texture/facial expression in the manner of Renaissance sculptures is a testament to the engraver's skill and the time that must have gone into to crafting such a piece. The overall design of this brooch/pendant is equally wonderful with classical Victorian embellishments and craftsmanship; two rope-twist borders contain a band of coiled gold wire that accentuates the central portrait. The reverse side of the brooch has a pin which allows it to be worn as a brooch with jumpers, jackets or coats. Furthermore, the bail at the top allows for this piece to be worn as a magnificent pendant necklace.Such combined factors make this cameo brooch a wonderful collectable piece of 19th-century antique jewellery, rich with history and style. Not only would this piece make for an excellent collectable/display but also serves as a versatile piece of Victorian jewellery to wear on special occasions. Certainly impressionable and distinguished, this piece would be a wonderful conversation starter and the perfect way to share your passion of history and antiques. The gold mount is unmarked as is common with many articles of this period. As such, we have tested it for 18ct gold (pin is not gold).
