Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this Imperial Russian antique silver snuff box made by silversmith T.Botkov in 1863, Moscow (Assay Master: Andrey Kovalsky).
This silver snuff box presents a wonderful niello design of a naval ship battle scene with a fine level of niello work on the ships and soldiers and hand engraved details which creates a contrasting background.
The base of the box features a monogrammed cartouche and some finely engraved lines with additional niello scrolled leaves.
All other sides of the box feature a diamond-shaped chequering niello design of small black and silver squares and a blank cartouche is present on the front side.
The interior has a lovely warm gold tone of gilding that contrasts the monotone exterior with a dazzling shine - some scratches are present as expected with age.
The box is fully hallmarked with Russian hallmarks on both the lid and base of the box.
A wonderful scenic snuff box made in the Imperial Russian era with an array of desirable features for collectors of Russian Niello silverware and/or those with an interest in militaristic depiction on silver.
