Description and Details
This solid silver gilt sleek and stylish case/box is made by Aleksandr Karpov, a Russian silversmith located in St Petersburg who operated during 1898-1908.
To those with a keen eye and expertise in Russian silver, this case undoubtedly presents itself boldly enough. However, for first-time viewers, its unique design and process of craftsmanship may well be easily overlooked. This case is made in "Samorodok" fashion - a Russian word meaning metal in its natural state.
As such, the whole case is left with a unique roughened texture which is created by heating the surface to near melting points, then quickly cooling it down in cold water, resulting in the surface leaving a similar effect to lava once a volcano's magma cools down.
An example of how such textures can be achieved through heating/cooling.
Such unique, creative and avant-garde craftsmanship resulted in these designs being highly desirable and stylish with large names such as Faberge commonly creating magnificent pieces with this technique.
A clear example of such ingenious style may be seen from the brand Cartier which replicated similar designs in their own products later down the line in history.
In addition to its unique design, this case has also been fully gilt both interior and exterior-wise, making it have an appearance of a gold case. The thumbpiece of the case also features a sapphire stone which appears to have been replaced from an earlier cabochon.
The overall build quality is second to none and has an impressive feel in hand. Particularly noteworthy is the design and smoothness of the hinge and closure - the hinge cannot be seen from the outside and the closure has an immaculately accurate fit which leaves the whole case appearing virtually seamless upon closure.
The case has been fully hallmarked on both sides with the maker's mark and 84 kokoshnik mark (for St Petersberg).
A superb piece of antique Russian silver ideal for those looking to add the finest and most stylish box to their collection whether it be for display or personal use. In an era with so many similar designs, brands and consumerism, indulge yourself with a timeless yet avant-garde design bound to interest and earn high regards from those with an eye for fine works of silver, jewellery and art.
