We are delighted to offer this handsome Georgian solid silver gilt snuff box made in Birmingham in 1810 with marks for William Simpson.
The box presents a classically elegant, modest yet opulent design, reflecting some of the best qualities of British understated design of the Georgian period.
In spite of its relatively 'simple' appearance, the heavy gauge quality of the silver used and its fully gilt (gold on top of solid silver) design wonderfully contradict its first impressions, immediately apparent as soon as it is held in hand.
The box is made from a very good gauge of silver and has a reassuring quality and heft in hand. Additionally, its modest yet curved design provides for an ergonomic fit in the hand and also when carried in pockets. Furthermore, a closer look at the hinge and the manner the curved lid closes reveals its high level of craftsmanship and intricacy where there is a perfect flush fit which has withstood the test of time.
The interior is also fully gilt, which provides a layer of protection from the contents inside oxidising/tarnishing the silver. The top lid presents a wonderful period crest that has been hand engraved.
With practicality, elegance and style combined in one, this snuff box case is the perfect accoutrement for any tobacciana collections or collectors of fine boxes.
Whilst originally designed for holding snuff tobacco, this box could also be used for storing mints, tablets or small items. A perfect gift or addition for the discerning individual and an equally delightful conversation starter.
A full set of English hallmarks is present on the interior lining of the lid.
