Description and Details
We are delighted to offer this magnificent pair of Georgian solid silver salts made by the Barnards in London, 1836.
The pair is sculpted in Rococo-revival style with a giant clam shell design and three conch shells as feet, supporting the bowls.
Sumptuously decorated with hand-chased and stippled scrolls, sea-spume & scalloped edges, this pair presents the most desirable and delightful traits of the late Georgian and Rococo revival period.Featuring a unique nautical theme, it is very fitting to its original intended use as salt cellars. In the modern day, it is perhaps equally wonderful to come up with creative uses such as a small sweets holder or even to serve a modest scoop of your favorite ice cream/sorbet.The bowls are silver-gilt providing a layer of protection for the silver from tarnishing with whatever may be held within. Despite salts being a relatively small item and an accessory of the dining table, the amount of embellishment and craftsmanship on this set is spectacular. Areas such as the three cast conch feet are truly delightful and convey the sense and spirit of Rococo; no cost-cutting and a penchant for extravagance.
Overall, a wonderful pair that represents fine late Georgian silversmithing with Rococo flair and a nautical theme - ideal both for practical use and collection without taking up much space.
Both salts are fully hallmarked with English marks on the side of the bowl.
