Antique English Silver Pocket Snuff Box - Georgian Design 1835

Description and Details

This English snuff box was made by silversmith Thomas Shaw in Birmingham, 1835. The snuff box retains a classic Georgian style design being just 5 years after the end of the Georgian period (1830 technically, although the definition is often extended to 1837 to include William IV).

The exterior features an engine turned design with reeded sides in addition to a lid with a high relief chased floral thumb-piece. Interiorwise, it is fully gilded and has a reflective finish on both the lid and base of the box. Despite its age, the gilding is in excellent condition.

As expected from Birmingham origin silverware, the construction quality and precision are meticulous. The box's hinge and lid operate smoothly and a tight shut and fit are present upon closure. In hand, the box's quality is apparent with a solid and trustworthy feel. 

The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark "TS", silver lion, Birmingham anchor and the date mark "m" for 1835.
