Description and Details
We are delighted to be able to offer this magnificent piece of silverware made by Martin Hall & Co of Sheffield in 1858.
Made during the Mid-Victorian period, this basket most certainly does not lack in ornamentation, embellishments nor elegance.
To begin with, the entire basket's base/bowl has been beautifully designed with multiple sectors that alternate between piercing, beading and hand-engraved motifs. Each sector is crafted precisely with an aesthetically superb geometric symmetry which emphasises the curved edges and angles of the basket.
The handle of the basket features further piercing and a cast figural base terminal which is all made with a heavy and thick gauge of silver allowing the user to hold the contents with great confidence.
(Interesting note: Silver baskets with handles were considered a sign of prestige due to its nature to be carried by servants who would carry the food to the owner's table from the kitchen - a powerful household would have multiple servants and the owners themselves would not have to hold/carry flatware and thus the baskets are not only useful through design but also serves as a subtle symbol of wealth).
The base of the basket is lifted by an equally impressive and decorative foot which spreads towards the table allowing for extra stability.
Particularly Noteworthy: Despite the design of the basket and piercing being impressive enough by itself, a skilled engraver has added hand engraved floral and foliate motifs in between the sectors and towards the inner ring of the basket.
Full set of English hallmarks are present on this basket.
