Description and Details
We have had the pleasure to acquire and offer this splendid and rare pair of silver bowls made by Royal silversmith Carrington & Co of London in 1909.
Carrington & Co - considered as one of London's great/important silversmiths receiving the Royal warrant (Royal Silversmith) from none less than Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Edward VII and George V.
Upon first glance, the fully gilt and lustrous gold exterior of the bowls presents a statement of significance with an ornate and rich colour that will likely contrast its surroundings and draw attention to its presence.
Additionally, the outer body exhibits a profusely chased and engraved design in the manner of Charles II with an array of floral and foliate motifs. The body of the bowl presents a 'hand-hammered' design and finish as found in the earlier Charles II pieces.
The cast handles attached to the body further continues a chased design of two lady figures with scrolled terminals which allows for holding/transport of the bowls with ease.
The lid on the bowls, equally heavy and crafted from a thick gauge of silver, presents further chasing and a pointed finial on top for ease of removal.
The interiors are also fully gilt which not only serves an aesthetic purpose but prevents the silver from tarnishing as the gold layer is less reactive to any content that may be placed within.
The bowls are shaped in the form of a 'porringer' - it is believed that the origins of porringers were introduced in the 17th Century, used to serve a variety of food and drinks such as bread, stews and milk/soups.
In the present day, this pair remaining in excellent condition may be used practically for many purposes not only limited to ornamental and display purposes - an indulging dinner with servings of bread, stews or soups would most certainly be a luxuriant experience.
Full English hallmarks are present on the side of each piece and matched by the marks on the lid.
A unique and distinct piece of fine silver-gilt silverware perfect for those who wish to embellish and highlight their interior with a lustrous gold-tone or as an addition of an intricately crafted pair of bowls to one's dining ware collection.
